Both traditional games - Parcheesi, chess, assassin or checkers - and the latest generation are a fantastic way to contribute to the development of children's motor, mental and sensory abilities, helping them to work in a team, solve problems, make their own decisions and develop their concentration, memory, logic, dexterity or imagination.

Today we will focus on creativity, reviewing which are the best board games to stimulate the creative muscle.

9 board games for children that stimulate creativity

  • Dixit : This is the king of this classification, a game as surprising as it is charming. Created in 2008 by Jean-Louis Roubira, the aim is to guess a card from clues given in the form of a sentence or a story. It has numerous extensions designed by different illustrators that allow the games to be enriched and ideas to be expanded. At an educational level, it has received prestigious awards such as the Game of the Year in Spain in the 2009 edition and the Spiel des Jahres in 2010. More than five hundred different cards have been published.
  • Storytelling : ideal for children who are passionate about reading, stories and good tales. Suitable for ages five and up, it is a game by Toni Serradesanferm illustrated by Evelt Yanait. Using a mechanic of visual perception and image location, it turns children into storytellers who must spin together familiar stories. The same company (Átomo) has another game called Storycolors , also focused on inventing stories, but by rolling dice.
  • Story Cubes : nine dice and millions of possible combinations. This narrative-style game is based on a simple but effective premise. You must roll the dice and tell your story using the illustrations or symbols that appear on the faces. When the next player's turn passes, they will roll the dice again and pick up the story where you left off.

  • Harmonies : This beautiful board game for ages 10 and up is designed to help you develop your imagination. The aim is to create a miniature world where animals and nature are in harmony and complement each other. Its visual beauty stands out, as each card is a small work of art.
  • Once upon a time : Classic fairy tales are the basis of this award-winning board game, which uses cards to guide the plot to the end of each story. You have different versions, with tales of knights, fairies, pirates or enchanted tales. You even have the option of creating your own cards.
  • Cakes : In this game of skill, each participant aims to be the baker who can make a 10-tier cake the fastest without dropping it. Created by Juan Carlos Ruis and designed by Natalia Romero, it focuses more on skill, timing and balance, but will also inspire your baking creativity.
  • Mime : Being creative, quick and imaginative with gestures and body language is the key to this game , where the winner is the person who guesses as many mime-like terms as possible. Laughter is guaranteed!
  • Inventa Kit : an exciting game to transform the little ones in the house into little inventors who can design new objects, sports, superheroines, tools, musical instruments and 150 more inventions.
  • Vaccine Mind : To round off the list, a really fun board game to think like everyone else, aimed at children aged 10 and up - and adults - and which enhances your mental agility and your ability to put yourself in other people's shoes. The aim is to answer the questions in a way that matches the majority of the other players' answers, putting you "in tune with the herd".

There are many more board games that encourage creativity : to draw and create things with your hands you can use Pictionary or Pintarama, while for music lovers we recommend Rhythm and Ball or karaoke. Don't forget the potter's wheel, the traditional modelling clay or the boxes to make jewellery and bracelets.
